England 2018:- Let the campaign begin!

Wonderful news! The 2018 World Cup will be held in Europe, and the odds are that it'll take place right here in England, with the final being staged at the brand spanking new Wembley.

Having been held twice in Germany (1974 & 2006) and once each in Spain (1982), Italy (1990) and France (1998) since the glorious summer of '66, England are heavy favourites to host the biggest show on Earth.

Sports Minister Richard Caborn and Chancellor Gordon Brown have already signalled their intent to bid for the event, hot on the heels of the successful London 2012 campaign.

As a special treat, I've searched the archives and dug up the theme tune for Euro '96, the last big football event to be staged on home soil. So sit back, relax and reminisce about a bright young leader on the verge of power, Britpop at its height and the 4-1 win over Holland ...

... and let's hope it's not "52 years of hurt" come 2018!!!
